College Credit Options

There are various ways to earn College Credit before setting foot on a college campus. The student must make a serious commitment to these options as they are academically challenging and require more time and effort from the student.

1) Dual Credit

This option is when a high school teacher at RHS teaches a college-level course on the high school campus. They must follow the rules set by the college/university where the credit will be earned. A student can take the class without paying for the college credit, meaning they will only earn high school credit. The cost per semester course varies by institution. If a student wants to earn the college credit, he/she must sign up for the class and pay the correct college by the due date. The college credit will be annotated on the student's COLLEGE TRANSCRIPT and will need to be sent to the student's attending college by the student upon graduation from high school.

  • Missouri Baptist University ($69/credit hour) course offerings: College Algebra, Pre-calculus, Calculus
  • St. Louis Community College ($25/credit hour) course offerings: Intermediate College Algebra, College Algebra, Comp 1 & 2, and Oral Communication
  • Saint Louis University ($65/credit hour) course offerings: Advanced Strategies of Rhetoric and Research (1st semester) and Gender, Identity and Literature (2nd semester)
  • University of Missouri-St Louis ($68/credit hour) course offerings: General Biology Lecture and Lab, Introductory Chemistry 1, and Theory of Music 1

2) Dual Enrollment

This option is when students take a college-level course taught by college-level instructors at St. Louis Community College. The cost is $72.50/credit hour; however, students enrolled in the Early College Academy at RHS are able to participate at no cost. Students must apply and be accepted into this program in order to participate. The minimum GPA is 2.5, and students must also be reading proficient according to STLCC's placement policy. Please contact Ms. Burnett or Mrs. Noonan for more info.

3) AP

College credit can also be earned when a student signs up to take an AP course with an RHS teacher AND also elects to take the AP exam (current cost $145) and receives a 3, 4, or 5 on his/her exam. The teacher will follow the curriculum approved by the College Board. A student must sign up in the fall to take the test, which will be proctored in May. If a student earns a 4 or 5 it is likely his/her college will accept this credit. Some Missouri colleges also accept 3's. To learn more, refer to the CollegeBoard website on various university credit policies.

English Language and Composition (AP Eng III)

4) CLEP Test

Students can also opt to take a CLEP test at their college campus (cost is around $89 plus a fee for the testing center) and earn college credit. This is a very inexpensive way to earn credit. Search your college website to see what courses they accept. What student would take this option? If they feel very confident in the material they learned while in high school but did not have the option of taking it for college credit or AP credit. You can download practice tests for each test online for as little as $10 to see if you are knowledgeable enough to do well on the test. Go to https://clep.collegeboard.org.
